How to Link Aadhar with Mobile Number

Linking Aadhaar to a mobile number is currently not possible online; instead, one must locate their nearest authorised centre and undergo biometric verification. The UIDAI has released a short tutorial video that demonstrates how to add or update a mobile number with Aadhaar.

The linking of Aadhaar with your mobile number serves to legitimise your identity as an Indian citizen, as the government can validate this data against your name, address, and a unique identification number (UID). This can then be used as identification at a variety of public and private institutions throughout the country to obtain services. The mobile number registered with Aadhaar can then be used to access Aadhaar services via SMS or even to retrieve the Aadhaar card if it is misplaced.

Steps to Link Aadhaar Card with Mobile Number

To complete the Aadhaar and SIM linking, telecom operators used a variety of methods. Verification methods included OTP (one-time password), agent assisted authentication, and an IVR facility. Individuals may also visit mobile stores to register their biometrics and complete the linking process. Users who wanted a new SIM card with Aadhaar had to go to the nearest Vodafone, Idea, or other mobile operator’s store. Here are the steps that had to be taken in order to complete this process.

  • Pay a visit to the mobile operator’s store.
  • Request a new SIM card
  • Provide a copy of your Aadhar card as proof of identity and address.
  • Use the Biometric Scanner to scan your fingerprint and verify your Aadhar card.
  • After the verification process is completed, a new SIM card will be issued.
  • SIM cards would be activated in about an hour.

Online Method

Subscribers could complete the linking process from the comfort of their own homes using this method. The following is a step-by-step procedure for linking:

  • Go to the website of the telecom operator.
  • Enter the registered mobile number to be linked, verified, or re-verified with Aadhaar OTP.
  • To proceed, enter your OTP and click “Submit.”
  • The screen would then display a consent message. It was necessary to enter the 12-digit Aadhaar number that would be linked.
  • The telecom operator would then send a message for OTP generation.
  • The user would then receive a confirmation message regarding the e-KYC details.
  • The user was required to accept all of the terms and conditions as well as enter the OTP.
  • When this was completed, a confirmation message regarding the Aadhaar and phone number re-verification was sent.
