What Is Content:// & How To Fix?

There is an error message you may frequently come across when using the standard Google Chrome mobile browser. The error message is about Content:// and it might be the most irritating kind of error you have ever faced in the world of smartphones and other mobile devices with built-in operating systems such as Android OS, iOS, or Windows Phone OS. It will not allow you to access your bookmarks, history, tabs, or other important data stored in the web browser.

What is Content://

Content:// is the URI that the Android Browser app can use to open web pages. It is similar to the URL (Uniform Resource Locator) of a web page, but it is not the same thing as a URL. The Android Browser app uses this URI to open pages in the browser instead of opening them in other apps, such as Google Chrome or Firefox.

Step to Change the Default Homepage on Android Browsers

The default homepage on Android browsers can be changed by going to the settings menu.

Steps to change the default homepage on the android browser:

1. Open the browser you want to change.

2. Tap the three-dot menu icon at the top-right corner of the screen and select Settings from the menu that pops up.

3. Next, tap Advanced in the Settings menu and scroll down until you find the Homepage option under the General section.

4. Tap Set Homepage and then choose any website from available options as your home page.

Steps to Change Default Web Browser on Android Browsers

When you open the Android browser, it automatically opens the content:// page. This page contains links to popular sites and services such as Google and YouTube. If you want to open a different site when you open the browser, you can change the default setting.

Step 1: Open the Settings app on your Android phone or tablet, then tap System.

Step 2: Scroll down and tap Default apps under Device settings.

Step 3: Tap Browser under Application settings, then tap Browse below Web browser (this is where you can change your default web browser).

Step 4: Select a web browser from the list of options, then tap OK at the top of your screen to save your changes

Steps to Change Default Homepage in Mozilla Firefox

Step 1: Type about: config in the browser’s address bar and press Enter to access the hidden settings

Step 2: Click on the button at the top-right corner of the screen that reads “I’ll be careful, I promise!”

Step 3: Scroll down until you find a setting called network.dns.disablePrefetch, right-click on it and select Toggle to turn it off.

Step 4: Restart Firefox

Steps to Change Default Homepage in Opera

Step 1: Open the Opera browser, and click on the three-dot menu button on the top right.

Step 2: Click on Settings from the drop-down menu.

Step 3: Select Preferences from the list of options that appear on the settings page.

Step 4: Select Homepage from the left panel of preferences.

Step 5: Click on Use Current Page to change the default homepage to any other website.

The Content:// page is safe to ignore as it is used by Android internally. You can remove or rename the folder that the said Content:// link is pointing to, but you may lose some app shortcuts and widgets related to those apps if you do so.
