History of Kedarnath Temple

In the war of Mahabharata they killed their own relatives due to which they were feeling guilty. The Pandavas wanted to get rid of the sin of killing their own relatives and in order to do that they wanted to please Lord Shiva with their penance. But nothing is easy, Lord Shiva was not in a mood to forgive them so easily.

As per the legend, Lord Shiva was in deep meditation. The gods and goddesses tried to search him but failed to find him as he was hidden in the earth. Lord Shiva incarnated as a form of bull to hide from them.

Only Bhima recognized the bull as Lord Shiva and tried to catch him by hitting the hind part of the bull with his mace. The temple history starts with the belief of the people that Lord Shiva appeared in the form of fire and took up residence at this place. How to reach Kedarnath from Delhi?

Kedarnath lies in the Himalayas, approximately 300 km from Delhi. The nearest airport is Jolly Grant airport. There is no direct route from Delhi to reach Kedarnath; however you can follow this route-Guruvayur, Haridwar or Rishikesh and then get a taxi or cab to reach Gaurikund. Once you reach Gaurikund, trekking of 18 km is needed to reach Kedarkantha trip valley. You can also opt for helicopter service if you want to avoid trekking.

There are two ways to reach Kedarnath from Delhi. One is via the Haridwar and Rishikesh route and other is via Gaurikund. Both these routes have different travel time, distance and overnight stay required. In case of Haridwar route, you can hire taxi or rent a car to reach there and then take Vijaynagar Express train which takes 20 minutes to reach Uttarkashi.
